Questioning: Our most important cognitive tool.
Trevor Bond

Workshop Outline:
We will examine this claim and the practical implications for the classroom. This interactive session will challenge your thinking and practice. We will look at practical strategies that can be used to make a real difference for our students.

Presenter Background:
Trevor has used computers in his classroom as a tool to enhance learning ever since he managed to get his hands on his first computer, the very powerful Commodore 64, in 1984. He spent 2 years as ICT adviser with School Support Services (University of Waikato) and has been co-director of 1 ICTPD cluster, has facilitated for 3 clusters and worked in some capacity with about 12 ICT PD clusters. Though he sees ICT as providing very powerful tools for the effective teacher, he firmly believes that the real magic comes from how the teacher utilises the tools and supports students in using the tools for learning.

Photography-“Communicating Powerfully with Photography”
Stuart Hale

Workshop Outline:
Photography is the only communication media that goes across all cultures, languages, age groups and levels of literacy! In the past digital photography workshops have covered the capture and editing process only. This workshop will cover the important aspects of how to communicate with photography in a powerful but simple way and will examine such things as the composition of photographs with the rule of thirds being covered. The workshop will look at content in terms of people, light, lines and colour. Emphasis will be placed on how to take "control" of the camera and be creative with the features it offers - such as taking control of focus and light settings, coping with background light, low light and taking amazing macro pictures.

Presenter Background:
With a background in primary teaching, he has specialised in ICT eLearning for the last 30 years.
His experience and expertise include:
• Lecturing in pre service for Early Childhood, Primary, Secondary and Special education for 7 years.
• District Adviser for ICT to schools for the Auckland area for 4 years
• Education Adviser to Apple Division of Renaissance in New Zealand for 14 years
He has now set up “iEducator” to specialise in delivering eLearning Professional Development to New Zealand schools.
During this time he has worked extensively with schools, staff and students to explore the full extent that ICT can be integrated in a Teaching and Learning environment. In the last 3 years he has worked with schools as they introduce and develop mobile devices that students will use, such as the iPod Touch and the iPad. To date he has worked with over 1700 teachers throughout New Zealand in hands on workshops, exploring the creative application of today’s ICT’s into the curriculum.

Software for Learning-“Raiders of the Lost Kete”

Workshop Outline:
Software for Learning is a kete within the TKI website; a treasure trove of software, where to get them, what teachers thought of them and how they are being used in the classroom. It is brimming with the latest software available to teachers and schools. Come and have a tour of the site, review some software you are familiar with, find some you’ve only heard about. Join the wiki community and have your say. Share your ideas and grab some thoughts and suggestions from others.
Presenter Background:Simon Evans is the project facilitator for Software for Learninghttp://softwareforlearning.tki.org.nz/initiative. As part of this role Simon supports teachers through; maintaining the online material, sharing effective pedagogy and informing teachers of updates through the Software for Learning newsletter, twitter-feed and blog. Prior to that he was a classroom teacher for 11 years. He enjoys riding, swimming and doing ridiculous ‘dad’ activities. He has spent the last year teaching his son to swim, but had to lower the expectation toward the end of the year to ‘teaching my son to not drown.’

“Building the 5th wall in your classroom and some tools to decorate it with”

Workshop Outline:
Using a wiki to create a genuine, relevant and authentic learning space for students should be easy. However what about the lack of equipment, space and skills? This session will show you how to take charge of e-learning in your classroom, manage the bottlenecks and create that engaging learning environment your students crave.

Presenter Background:
David is an independent e-learning consultant in Auckland managing 4 ICT clusters as well as working with individual schools and commercial clients. David has been Head of IT at a secondary Girls’ school in the UK and director of IT at a primary and intermediate school in Auckland. Prior to becoming an e-learning specialist, David worked as a classroom teacher and before that he was an advertising photographer in London.

“Supporting the Curriculum with Digistore”
Suzie Vesper (National Library Service NZ)
Workshop Outline:
Te Pātaka Matihiko - Digistore is a storehouse of digital content to support learning across the curriculum.
This workshop is targeted at Digistore beginners and aims to support teachers to locate and integrate digital content into their classroom learning programmes.
As part of this workshop, teachers will also be given support to create learning paths within Digistore. These provide a way of organising resources on Digistore into collections that can then easily be shared with students.
Teachers can expect to walk out of this workshop with knowledge on how to:
  • search for digital learning objects and digitised resources
  • organise and manage content for use in classrooms using learning paths.
This workshop will be embedded in practical classroom examples and the principles of effective pedagogy (The New Zealand Curriculum, p.34-36).

Presenter Background:
Suzie Vesper is currently working in two separate roles: one as a Digi Advisor for Digistore and Software for Learning; and one as an online teacher for a pilot ESOL virtual school. Previously she was a national facilitator for the ICT PD project. Mimio - Getting More out of your Mimio
Judy Bentley/Lainey Mills
Workshop Outline:
Got a “Mimio” in your classroom? Understand the basics? Ready for the next step?
Judy and Lainey will demonstrate some basic Mimio tools and explore the galleries with you. They will show you how to make more use of this marvellous interactive tool and how to access and create your own resources.

Presenter Background:
Lainey Mills is the National Training Manager for Waterman Innovations Ltd. She has worked in this role for the past 4 years. (Wow! where does the time go?) Prior to that she worked for 3 years as an ICT Facilitator in an Auckland Cluster. She was a classroom teacher for 18 years.
Judy Bentley has been with Waterman Innovations for three years and says it is the best job she has ever had, playing with cool tools all day! Judy is the Mimio support person. Her role involves demonstrations, technical support and public relations. Prior to working for Waterman Innovations, Judy was an ICT Facilitator with TEAM Solutions and facilitated ICTPD contracts.

Digital Resources for classroom use National Library Service (NZ)

Workshop Outline:
AnyQuestions.co.nzis a free online reference service for New Zealand school students. The service is staffed by friendly, skilled librarians from around New Zealand and is intended as a “guide on the side” when needed. Operators assist students in finding quality online resources or simply to talk through their questions.
EPIC is a venture between New Zealand libraries and the Ministry of Education, giving schools free access to a worldwide range of electronic resources. Through EPIC schools can access databases containing thousands of international and New Zealand magazines, newspapers, biographies, substantial reference works, and images. EPIC lets you access up-to-date full text articles covering a huge range of subjects.
Find out how both these services work and how they can assist students and schools on a daily basis.
Paula Banks and Robert and we will be introducing and demonstrating the benefits of the “AnyQuestions” suite of websites (AnyQuestions, UiaNgāPātai and ManyAnswers) and EPIC databases to students.

“Juniors Can do IT” - eLearning & ICT ideas for beginners in a Junior Classroom

Workshop Outline:
This workshop will look at rich, authentic, real-life eLearning/ICT examples with juniors. A smorgasbord of simple ideas for better use of digital cameras, mind mapping software and digital paint programmes will be showcased and shared; including those with an emphasis on literacy.
A great workshop for beginners... come along and gain inspiration for eLearning with your junior class for this term and beyond!
Participants are invited to bring their laptop to work on (no Internet access required)

Presenter Background:
Rachel is a DP (responsibility for eLearning) and full time Year 2 classroom teacher (6 year olds) from Waiuku Primary School. In her 9th year of teaching she has always taught at junior levels, from Years 1-3.
Rachel is an experienced presenter who has facilitated and led ICTPD throughout many clusters nationwide as well as presented at past Learning@School,Tuanz,Time4Online and U Learn ICT conferences.
Throughout the last 6 years, Rachel has enjoyed exploring the possibilities of eLearning & web 2.0 with her students and pushing the boundaries of what 5, 6 & 7 year olds are capable of - little kids can "do" ICT too!

“Work With What You Have” -Creating e-learning opportunities with limited resources.
Kirstin Anderson-McGhie

Workshop Outline:
The focus for this session is on ways to include ICT in classroom programmes when there is limited access to digital hardware and software.
Participants will be given the opportunity to explore ways of including ICT in the 1 computer classroom or when there is limited access to multiple computers.
We will also look at ways programmes that come with your computer e.g. Paint, can be used to create engaging and meaningful learning opportunities. Consideration will also be given to web based tools and resources and how to access these when connectivity is a problem.

Presenter Background:
Kirstin Anderson-McGhie teaches a Year 3/4 class at Oteha Valley School in Auckland. She is interested in infusing e-learning into classroom programmes in a way that is both authentic and engaging for students. Kirstin has previously presented at ULearn 08, ULearn 09, ULearn 10 and the Northern Bays Cluster Conference 2008.

“Auditory learning ideas using flash memory based devices”
Jonathan Owens (Sitech Systems Ltd)
Workshop Outline:
Auditory learning ideas will be explored. New technology and devices recently released on the market uses flash memory technology. Ideas will be explored for children who are stronger auditory learners or ESOL students. Demonstration of tools used for helping students with pronunciation, rehearsing speeches, interview techniques and other auditory based learning will be explored.

Presenter Background:
Jonathan has a wealth of experience in the audio-visual and educational technology fields. He worked as an audio visual salesperson before spending about 7 years working as a technician for a University Physics department, building experiments, working in a teaching laboratory and touring schools promoting Physics. He moved to Hamilton in 2001 and began working for Sitech Systems NZ. He covers a large area of the North Island from south of Auckland to Palmerston North (an area that is now covered by 3 people!). He has seen major developments in technology in the classroom from data projectors to interactive whiteboards, sound field systems, visualisers and many more new innovative ideas to enhance education.

Using e-Portfolios to Promote Student-Centred Learning”
Belinda Johnston

Workshop Outline:
At Elm Park School we have been using e-Portfolios in Years 1 to 6 since 2008 and the journey is still very much on going. We’ll look at these e-Portfolios with a particular focus on student reflections – purpose, equipment, applications and teaching resources. Part of this session will also be hands-on with the opportunity to use some of the web 2.0 tools we have found most useful to create effective student reflections including fotobabble and vocaroo.
Presenter Background:
Belinda is the e-Learning Facilitator at Elm Park School and was the Director and Facilitator for Eastnet ICT-PD Cluster 2008-10. Earlier this year she was selected as an Apple Distinguished Educator, Class of 2011. She is passionate about the use of e-Portfolios & mobile learning to increase student engagement and achievement.

“ClickView”-online video resource for school and home

Workshop Outline:“Clickview” is a complete digital video solution. It is a large digital library of educational videos, both for primary and secondary levels. It gives teachers access to hundreds of educational video clips- no more hours spent randomly searching the web!
“Clickview” also enables teachers to manage and store video content made by students and to record from “Free To Air” tv.
“Clickview” is designed to assist learning in the classroom by providing a simple and complete solution for watching digital video. By using “Clickview” teachers and students are no longer restricted by the availability of AV equipment, and are free to access all of the school’s digital resources from any computer at home or at school.
